The new Generation 2 Aeon Labs Clamp Meter is now in stock and replaces the now obsolete G1 version.
The Clamp Meter G2 version isn't just a simple updated product, it's a totally different 'beast' compared to the G1. So different, I thought it was worth writing this post to highlight the differences, so you don't get a surprise when it arrives.
Voltage and Current Metering
The redesigned unit now measures voltage as well as current - this makes it more accurate as the power readings will be based on actual voltage and current measurements.
Mains Power Only
The G2 Clamp is mains powered only - it has no battery option. Again this makes it much more accurate and is the only way for it to measure the voltage.
But, more importantly it must be wired into your home's main circuit breakers - it is not USB powered like the old version. This means that you need to ensure that you have space available in your circuit board and that you are able to wire it to the circuit breakers (you may need an electrician).
3-Phase Only
Even more importantly - the 2-clamp and 3-clamp versions must be used with a 3-phase supply. They cannot be used in a single-phase supply.
- 2-clamp - ONLY works with a 3-phase (3-wire) supply, it CANNOT be used with a 1-phase supply
- 3-clamp - ONLY works with a 3-phase (4-wire) supply, it CANNOT be used with a 1-phase or 3-phase (3-wire) supply
These changes make it more difficult to use for most users and impossible for you to use if you have a single-phase supply - which is the normal type of supply in the majority of homes. So check the user manual and your electricity supply.
We are working with Aeon to add the 1-clamp version to our range. This will work in single-phase supplies but will still need to be wired into the circuit breaker. We'll let you know more in the next few weeks.
